Reviews are important to run an online business. But not all reviews are going to help your business. There are positive reviews, negative reviews and neutral reviews. And interestingly, each of them has something to tell about your business. That’s the reason why it is important to calculate the review rating that you receive from the customers.
Now, ratings are usually given within the range of 1 to 5. Some websites allow the customers to rate in decimals like 4.5 or 3.5. But in most cases, the ratings are just regular numbers between 1 and 5. Interestingly, each of the numbers in a rating describes different types of reviews from the customers.
You can also use the ratings to classify what kind of feedback your customers are sharing about your service or product. The rating of 5 means excellent, and that’s the highest rating a service provider can get. On the other end of the spectrum, the rating of 1 means the worst kind of service. And that’s the lowest rating a service provider can get.
Now, coming to the classification of reviews, here’s what the ratings signify:
When the customer rates your service or product greater than or equal to 4 stars (which is 4.0 to 5.0), it is considered a positive review. It means your service was excellent.
Usually, the reviews that are greater than or equal to 3-star ratings but are less than 4-star ratings (3.0 to 3.9) are considered neutral reviews. These reviews signify that your service was average.
Any review of fewer than 3 stars (1.0 to 2.9) is considered a negative one. It signifies that the customer is extremely dissatisfied with your service.
This is the standard calculation of review ratings for online products and services. However, some websites also extend the range of rating points to 10 or even 100. Whatever the range may be, the calculation of reviews is done in the same ratio.
Of course, you need to make some changes in the calculation, but the classification of reviews for a rating within the range of 1 to100 is done in compliance with the mathematical equivalent to 1 to 5 rating standard.
If you are getting a lot of reviews, you may find it overwhelming to get the overall rating of the services. For that, you can use a simple calculation:
[ (no. of 5 star reviews x 5) + (no. of 4 star reviews x 4) + (no. of 3 star reviews x 3) + (no. of 2 star reviews x 2) + (no. of 1 star reviews x 1) ] ÷ total number of reviews = avg. review
Say you have received 30 5-star reviews, 37 4-star reviews and 25 3-star reviews in total, then the average review of your service would be:
[ (30 x 5) + (37 x 4) + (25 x 3) ] ÷ [30+37+25]
= [ 150 + 148 + 75 ] ÷ 92
= 373 ÷ 92
